JOHNSON CITY MEDICAL CENTER ICU ROOFTOP GARDEN

Nature has proven healing qualities, be it fresh air, soothing sounds, visual stimulation or physical exercise. Thus, healthcare facilities that intentionally incorporate these healing qualities in the design of their campuses see higher and quicker recovery rates for their patients than those facilities that do not.

From campus master plans to rooftop healing gardens, landscape architects can guide and direct the healing environment of healthcare facilities in a range of ways.

JOHNSON CITY MEDICAL CENTER   |   Johnson City, TN
A dated and under-utilized rooftop garden was re-imagined for use by patients and family in the ICU unit of the hospital. Taking advantage of a turret-styled waiting room, an image of a waterfall was chosen to adorn the windows and an implied stream bed meanders through the space creating alcoves for private seating. Plants were chosen to resemble a native stream corridor for East Tennessee with seasonal interest and texture.  A second, more rectilinear option was developed and ultimately chosen as the new design.
