BRISTOL REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER

Nature has proven healing qualities, be it fresh air, soothing sounds, visual stimulation or physical exercise. Thus, healthcare facilities that intentionally incorporate these healing qualities in the design of their campuses see higher and quicker recovery rates for their patients than those facilities that do not.

From campus master plans to rooftop healing gardens, landscape architects can guide and direct the healing environment of healthcare facilities in a range of ways.

Olmsted is credited for bringing arrival sequences into focus for landscape architects, and be it a private residence or a healthcare campus, the principles are the same. Plinths bound by stone walls were designed to give the facility a worthy “front door” experience while also directing visitor traffic to the entrance of the hospital. Consistent plantings were proposed along the arrival sequence to further tie the experience together visually.
