STONEWALL HEIGHTS RESIDENCE

Stonewall Heights is an eclectic neighborhood within historic Abingdon, Virginia.  Colonial and craftsman architecture dominate the majority of homes along this suburban ridge line but one outlier exists that boasts mid-century modern massing and lines.  Typically these properties remain in the same family for generations, creating a nice mix of young families living beside elderly residents throughout the community.

BLA was approached by the owner’s daughter with a common aging in place problem to solve.  The garage and parking are located on the basement level with main living spaces on the floor above.  Stairs were becoming an issue to negotiate, especially with groceries in hand, and the only outside access to the main floor was on a long, narrow, crumbling path from the driveway.  Thus, we were was asked to design access with a carport that would give easier entrance to the main floor of the residence.

Initially, the design called for a second driveway that would allow pulling in directly off the main road.  However, upon reviewing the local zoning ordinance and having discussions with local municipal planners, it was determined that only one driveway is allowed.  As the Client wanted to keep driveway access to the garage level, an internal driveway was designed that required a retaining wall to accomplish an agreeable grade.

Once the carport and drive were oriented, a carport design was envisioned to compliment the mid-century modern architecture and translated that style to the landscape elements.  Upon approvals from the Client and Municipality, a collaborative effort began with a local architect and structural engineer to finalize the carport design and obtain construction bids for the project.  Construction observation services and post-construction evaluation have ensured excellence in the final product and that the project meets the Client’s needs in perpetuity.

In projects that seek to integrate new construction with existing structures, the highest compliment that can be paid when the work is done is that it looks like it has always existed.  The Client and neighbors have both expressed this sentiment since the project’s completion, signaling a job well done.
